How to Safely Store Icicle Lights

LED icicle lights have become one of the most common Christmas decorations. The graceful charm these lights bestow on homes and shops alike have made them so popular they are now available in a variety of colors to celebrate every holiday. But so many strings and cords of varying length make these lights an enormous hassle when it comes to storage. If not put away properly it's quite possible to spend hours engaged with a frustrating battle with tangled cords. Not only is it everyone's least favorite chore, you can risk damaging the lights. Proper storage significantly increases the life and performance of the lights, as well as your enjoyment of the holiday season. Following these seven simple steps will make preparing for the holidays fun and stress-free. 1. Purchase a roll of plastic sheeting about 4 mill thick from the local hardware store. 2. Lay the first string of icicle lights on the ground on top of a piece of plastic cut about 1 foot longer than the string of lights and lay the lights on the sheet. 3. Place the main wire along the top edge of the plastic and begin folding all the strands of icicle in the same direction so that they are parallel with the main wire. 4. Once all the strands are parallel to each other, begin rolling the plastic from the edge until all the wires and bulbs are completely enclosed. 5. Take down the next string of lights and spread it on the plastic sheet right next to the roll you just made. Just as before, lay all the strands parallel to the main wire and then continue rolling the plastic until everything is covered. Repeat this process until all the icicles are rolled up. 6. Be sure to leave a little extra plastic at the end to ensure the lights won't fall out. Use duct tape or zip ties to secure the ends so that the plastic will not unroll. At this point you can either leave the lights in one large log, or fold it up to make it smaller and easier to store. 7. Carefully store them in a cool place where they'll be safe until next year. Now that you have all of the necessary steps to take care of and store your beautiful Christmas lights, you'll find that next years decorating will be even more of a breeze.
